Ceramic Galleries in Tajimi

About

Eihoji is a Zen Buddhist temple established in 1313, perched on Kokeizan (Mt. Kokei), a mountain overlooking the city of Tajimi, in Gifu Prefecture.

The grounds span over ten traditional temple buildings and structures, including designated national cultural treasures (Kannon-do and Kaisando). The temple garden overlooks the Toki River and is a designated site of scenic beauty, with an idyllic pond, bridge, waterfall, and bamboo grove.

Eihoji is a stunningly beautiful temple any time of year, with autumn foliage (koyou), Cherry Blossoms (sakura) in spring, and the cool mossy shade in summer.

Highlights
  • Wooden bridges with a roof feature in this style are quite rare. Climb the bridge for a beautiful aspect over the temple garden, and spot the koi swimming in the pond below
  • The spectacular 25 m tall ginkgo tree next to the main temple building is estimated to be 700 years old. It is believed to have been planted by the founder of the temple, Buttoku Zenji
  • Meander through the gardens up through the bamboo grove to the peak of Kokeizan for a view over the ceramic city, Tajimi
  • An ascetic monk (Unsui) tolls the temple bell (bonsho) at every sundown in the late afternoon
